WHAT IS DOWN SYNDROME?
Down syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality which is the leading cause of mental retardation. It occurs in approximately one out of every 800 live births. While women over the age of 35 are more likely to give birth to a baby with Down syndrome, over 80% of babies born with Down syndrome have mothers under age 35.

Down syndrome can result in approximately 50 different physical characteristics, any combination of which may be present in persons with Down syndrome. These characteristics include eyes that appear slanted, short curved fifth finger, short stature and reduced muscle tone. About 40% of babies with Down syndrome have congenital heart disease. Some babies also have intestinal blockages. Prompt medical attention is necessary and available for these conditions. There are varying degrees of handicaps in each person with Down syndrome but mental retardation is usually present with most individuals functioning in the mild to moderate range.

A person with Down syndrome has the right to develop his or her potential to the fullest and to be an active member of the community. With appropriated education and support from their community and legislature, they are now achieving this goal.
